WebThe gateway hypothesis states that the use of one substance will put an individual at increased risk of misusing another substance. This theory was very popular in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s during the “War on Drugs”. It was often used to encourage people, especially young people, to stay away from certain drugs such as marijuana.
